It\u2019s one of those things that isn\u2019t really a secret but I\u2019ve just never come across it.<\/p>\n<p>With a Windows XP or Windows 2003 machine that was domain joined if you needed to logon to a local account there was the very helpful dropdown that showed all available domains as well as the local computer account. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/image2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 7px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/image_thumb2.png\" width=\"413\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just choose where you want to logon to and away you go. <\/p>\n<p>Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 are a little different. The drop down list isn\u2019t displayed. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/image3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 7px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/image_thumb3.png\" width=\"413\" height=\"481\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>if you click the \u201cHow do I logon to another domain\u201d link you&#8217;ll get a helpful dialog box with the name of the computer listed  which you can then manually type.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/image4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 7px 12px 7px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/image_thumb4.png\" width=\"548\" height=\"383\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 are largely the same. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Win8Logon1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 7px 12px 7px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"Win8Logon1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Win8Logon1\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Win8Logon1_thumb.png\" width=\"502\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>Having to find the computer name and then type it in is one of those minor inconveniences that waste a few seconds of your day. <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom-style: none; border-right-style: none; border-top-style: none; border-left-style: none\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-winkingsmile\" alt=\"Winking smile\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/wlEmoticon-winkingsmile.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The solution is to replace the computer name with a dot (or period if you\u2019re from the US)<\/p>\n<p>e.g<\/p>\n<p><strong>.\\UserName<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>is just the same as<\/p>\n<p><strong>ComputerName\\UserName<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/image5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 7px 12px 7px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/image_thumb5.png\" width=\"538\" height=\"514\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Win8Logon.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 7px 12px 7px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px\" title=\"Win8Logon\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Win8Logon\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Win8Logon_thumb.png\" width=\"539\" height=\"316\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The PC name is then filled in automatically for you. <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve always known about this you\u2019ll probably wonder what I\u2019m rattling on about it for but as I mentioned earlier it\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve ever come across it.
