{"id":129,"date":"2007-07-11T10:17:32","date_gmt":"2007-07-11T10:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/parkesy.wordpress.com\/2007\/07\/11\/pst-files-unsupported-on-lan\/"},"modified":"2007-07-11T10:17:32","modified_gmt":"2007-07-11T10:17:32","slug":"pst-files-unsupported-on-lan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/2007\/07\/11\/pst-files-unsupported-on-lan\/","title":{"rendered":"PST Files Unsupported on LAN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We recently did some data reorganising at one of client sites<\/p>\n<p>The idea was to make the folder structure reflect the current organision (some departments had been merged, made redundant,etc), setup new permissions and setup new network drives for easy access<\/p>\n<p>One of the users reported that he didn&#8217;t want drive X: to disappear as his Outlook PST wouldn&#8217;t work<\/p>\n<p>!!!!<\/p>\n<p>We all know that PSTs on your file servers are bad but users always ask &#8220;why?&#8221; so i thought i&#8217;d see if i could come up with some official reference to point him at<\/p>\n<p>First up, the <strong>official<\/strong> <strong>line<\/strong> is in the guise of a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/default.aspx\/kb\/297019\/en-us\" title=\"MS KB 297019\">Microsoft KB article<\/a><\/p>\n<p>PSTs stored on the LAN (or WAN) have been officially unsupported since Exchange 4<\/p>\n<p>I also found an entry on the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/askperf\/archive\/2007\/01\/21\/network-stored-pst-files-don-t-do-it.aspx\" title=\"Enterprise Performance Team\" class=\"broken_link\">Enterprise Platforms Support Windows Server Performance team blog<\/a>\u00a0(or <em>Ask the the performance team<\/em> which is easier!) which shows off a so real world information which you don&#8217;t always get with a KB article and goes into a bit details as to why PST have such an impact on performance<\/p>\n<p>After speaking to the client he wanted to use PST files so that he could archive any old\u00a0messages to keep them away from his Mailbox\u00a0(storage limits in place) but still have access\u00a0to them on a daily basis<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0is going to create the PST file on his local drive but use the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/downloads\/details.aspx?FamilyId=8B081F3A-B7D0-4B16-B8AF-5A6322F4FD01&amp;displaylang=en\" title=\"Personal Folders Backup \">Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders Backup tool<\/a>\u00a0(more info <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\/en-us\/outlook\/HA010875321033.aspx\" title=\"using backup tool\">here<\/a>\u00a0so that he can get them covered by the file server backup.\u00a0I haven&#8217;t used the tool before so if there is anything weird or wonderful i&#8217;ll post about it<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We recently did some data reorganising at one of client sites The idea was to make the folder structure reflect the current organision (some departments had been merged, made redundant,etc), setup new permissions and setup new network drives for easy access One of the users reported that he didn&#8217;t want drive X: to disappear as<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"readmore\" href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/2007\/07\/11\/pst-files-unsupported-on-lan\/\"><span class=\"arrow-right icon\"><\/span>Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[30],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-129","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-outlook"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.11 -
