It\u2019s a setup I\u2019ve been using for a long time and I really notice the difference when I have to use a single screen. (I use three in the office and two at home) <\/p>\n<p>Working remotely though can have an impact on this. <\/p>\n<p>Up until the recently the only option for multiple monitors was span mode. <\/p>\n<p>From the run dialog enter:<\/p>\n<p><strong>MSTSC \/span<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you connect, the screens you\u2019re using are treated as one huge entity. It\u2019s a subtle difference that still makes use of your extra screens but you lose some of the benefits you get when managing multiple windows. For example, if you maximise an application it fills both screens instead of just the one. Some of the nice Windows 7 <a href=\"http:\/\/windows.microsoft.com\/en-GB\/windows7\/products\/features\/snap\">features such as \u201csnap\u201d<\/a> don\u2019t work in the same way either. <\/p>\n<p>So because of this I was really interested in the \u201cUse all my monitors for the remote session\u201d option in the latest version of the Remote Desktop Connection client.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 7px 12px 7px 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/image_thumb.png\" width=\"293\" height=\"159\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, just ticking the box doesn\u2019t seem to do anything. <\/p>\n<p>You can also use <strong>MSTSC \/multimon<\/strong> if you\u2019re so inclined.<\/p>\n<p>After a bit of digging it turns out that it\u2019s reliant on the RDP 8.0 protocol which needs to be specifically turned on.<\/p>\n<p>To enable RDP 8 in Windows 7:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Install updates <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/2574819\"><strong>KB2574819<\/strong><\/a><strong> and <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/2592687\"><strong>KB2592687<\/strong><\/a><strong> on the Windows 7 system you\u2019ll be connecting to. <\/strong>If you\u2019re connecting from Windows 7 machine install them there too.
