A few days ago I restarted a virtual machine and was presented with the message.<\/p>\n

We couldn’t complete the updates <\/strong><\/p>\n

Undoing changes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t turn off your computer<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Very helpful.<\/p>\n

The server just sat there for ages, apparently doing nothing. <\/p>\n

After a brief search I came across a post on the Microsoft forums<\/a> that indicated an update was giving some problems (KB2920189<\/a>)<\/p>\n

One of the suggested actions was to disable secure boot, start the virtual machine, allow the update to install and then re-enable secure boot. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s a Windows 2012 R2 Gen2 virtual machine so it had that option. <\/p>\n

I turned it off but this didn\u2019t doing anything. <\/p>\n

A further post on the forum pointed to a known issue with that update<\/a>. The fix for that is to install the BitLocker features as the update is looking it. You don\u2019t need to encrypt any drives, just have the feature installed. My specific problem wasn\u2019t exactly described in that article but it wouldn\u2019t hurt to add the feature and find out.<\/p>\n

But how to do that if the server won\u2019t even boot?<\/p>\n

Well as the title probably already suggests you can do this with a virtual machine when it\u2019s offline. <\/p>\n

Shut the virtual machine down<\/p>\n

Start server manager and select the \u201cAdd roles and features\u201d option<\/p>\n

Click through the first couple of pages on the wizard until you get the server selection page.<\/p>\n

From here you need the \u201cSelect a virtual hard\u201d option at the top of the screen<\/p>\n

Then choose the virtual hard disk that has your operating system at the bottom of the screen. <\/p>\n

From here it\u2019s exactly the same as method to add a role or feature as normal.<\/p>\n
