It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Win1803.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"Win1803\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Win1803_thumb.png\" alt=\"Win1803\" width=\"688\" height=\"212\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The computer was basically unusable. Icons were missing from my desktop. Programs wouldn\u2019t run and those that did took a long time to start. I couldn\u2019t even right click on anything. It made troubleshooting very difficult.<\/p>\n<p>I was able to boot into safe mode. I had a similar experience although I was able to do a little bit more (command prompt for example!). But wasn\u2019t able to much in the way of troubleshooting.<\/p>\n<p>Error message says the systemprofile\\desktop folder was unavailable and I was able to confirm that folder was indeed missing. I created a new folder, and set the same permissions as it would normally have (if you google that error message that\u2019s the solution that is generally suggested)<\/p>\n<p>This didn\u2019t work for me.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">I was about to format the hard drive and start again with a clean install but I thought I\u2019d give one more thing a try.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">** Usual disclaimer at this point. Make sure you\u2019ve got some sort of backup of your data before trying this. If you lose data by the following the steps below that&#8217;s not my fault! **<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I downloaded the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/software-download\/windows10\">Windows 10 install media<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pressed Windows Key &amp; R to get the run dialog. (as I couldn\u2019t use the start menu!)<\/p>\n<p>Entered cmd.exe and pressed Ctrl+Shift+Enter to elevate<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/run.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"run\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/run_thumb.png\" alt=\"run\" width=\"353\" height=\"184\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then ran powershell from here (as I couldn\u2019t get powershell to open from the run dialog!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/cmd.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"cmd\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/cmd_thumb.png\" alt=\"cmd\" width=\"626\" height=\"136\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The used the following powershell command to mount the ISO (as I couldn\u2019t get Explorer to run!)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Mount-DiskImage -ImagePath &#8220;C:\\ISO\\Windows10.iso&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/power.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; background-image: none;\" title=\"power\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/power_thumb.png\" alt=\"power\" width=\"628\" height=\"108\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and then used the same Powershell window to launch setup.exe<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/setup.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;\" title=\"setup\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/setup_thumb.png\" alt=\"setup\" width=\"390\" height=\"121\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After clicking through the first couple of screens I was happy to see the second tick on this screen<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cKeep personal files and apps\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Win1803a.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;\" title=\"Win1803a\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Win1803a_thumb.png\" alt=\"Win1803a\" width=\"519\" height=\"410\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This meant it had detected the existing install and was going to upgrade Windows, or at least attempt to, in it\u2019s current state.<\/p>\n<p>A short while later it finished, the computer rebooted and everything was working fine!<\/p>\n<p>In the early days of Windows this was a called a in-place upgrade or a repair install. I haven\u2019t used this for a long time, I wasn\u2019t even sure you could still do it but I\u2019m glad it worked here.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing too ground breaking going here! Just wanted to document what had happened in case I need to point anyone else at it <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile\" src=\"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/wlEmoticon-smile.png\" alt=\"Smile\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">** UPDATE &#8211; 23rd July **<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">So the Monday after I posted this I had the exact same thing happen on a clients PC. Had to go to site. Not much I could do remotely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I followed the same steps and the installer got to 98% and just sat there for ages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Eventually gave up and powered the PC off and it was in exactly the same state as when I&#8217;d started.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">As part of the research for the first time this happened I saw some mentions about Trend Micro anti-virus. This PC was using that so I stopped and disabled the\u00a0<strong>ntrtscan<\/strong> and the\u00a0<strong>tmlisten<\/strong> services and ran the setup again. All went through fine the second time. I re-enabled those services when I&#8217;d finished and all was ok.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">It&#8217;s possible the anti-virus had nothing to do with it and the second attempt succeeded. But it&#8217;s something else to bear in mind if I come across this again as my PC had Trend too, one was the hosted service and one was the on-premises version.
