{"id":232,"date":"2008-02-20T15:15:08","date_gmt":"2008-02-20T15:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/parkesy.wordpress.com\/?p=247"},"modified":"2008-02-20T15:15:08","modified_gmt":"2008-02-20T15:15:08","slug":"sbs-2008-officially-essential","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/2008\/02\/20\/sbs-2008-officially-essential\/","title":{"rendered":"SBS 2008 &#8211; Officially Essential"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I saw various blog posts pop with morning with news of some announcements from Microsoft<\/p>\n<p>Dave Overton has some posts with some good info<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/uksbsguy.com\/blogs\/doverton\/archive\/2008\/02\/20\/quot-windows-essential-server-solutions-family-of-products-quot-announcement.aspx\" title=\"DO\">&#8220;Windows Essential Server Solutions family of products&#8221; announcement<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/uksbsguy.com\/blogs\/doverton\/archive\/2008\/02\/20\/windows-essential-business-server-announcement.aspx\" title=\"DO\">Windows Essential Business Server Announcement<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/uksbsguy.com\/blogs\/doverton\/archive\/2008\/02\/20\/small-business-server-2008-formally-known-as-cougar-announcement.aspx\" title=\"DO\">Small Business Server 2008 (formally known as Cougar) announcement<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';\">This officially places SBS and EBS directly under the same umbrella.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';\">There is also a brand new web site covering lots of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/windowsserver\/essential\/sbs\/default.mspx\" title=\"SBS\" class=\"broken_link\">detail for SBS here<\/a>\u00a0and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/windowsserver\/essential\/ebs\/default.mspx\" title=\"EBS\" class=\"broken_link\">EBS here<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';\">The product overview gives a glimpse of some of the software with a couple of screen shots of the management console (which is still labeled cougar!) and the new remote web workplace<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';\">Also mentioned is &#8220;integration with Office Live&#8221;. Very vague but i&#8217;ll be interested to hear more about this<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';\">When you buy SBS you&#8217;ll also get a years subscription to ForeFront and OneCare. This takes the &#8220;all-in-one&#8221; solution a bit further on. If the re-newal price point is good this could get interesting in the A\/V market<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';\">I\u00a0understand the need to bring all this together under\u00a0a single &#8220;family&#8221;\u00a0of products and i like how SBS and EBS are interchangeable depending on the size of your  customer and their needs. I have client who from a user size perspective (about 35 users) and should really be using SBS but their technology usage means they have currently have four &#8220;regular&#8221; windows servers. EBS would fit really well here<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';\">My initial question is, since this is all under the same family will we be able to move up the products as the client grows<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';\">If an company starts with SBS 2008 standard,grows a bit. Adds premium server for the SQL capability, grows a bit more and decides they need EBS. Will they be able to scale up? or is this a transition\/migration job?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';\">I commented before on how i was initially disappointed that we were &#8220;losing&#8221; SQL to the second premium server. I still think this but i&#8217;m now only disappointed from geek &#8220;i want everything&#8221; perspective.
