{"id":308,"date":"2008-09-23T22:45:43","date_gmt":"2008-09-23T22:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/parkesy.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/23\/the-national-computer-museum-at-bletchley-park\/"},"modified":"2008-09-23T22:45:43","modified_gmt":"2008-09-23T22:45:43","slug":"the-national-computer-museum-at-bletchley-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/2008\/09\/23\/the-national-computer-museum-at-bletchley-park\/","title":{"rendered":"The National Computer Museum at Bletchley Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> I posted a little while back about the <a href=\"Bletchley Park given a boost\" class=\"broken_link\">good news Bletchley Park received<\/a> and said that I&#8217;d like to visit and take a look around the National Computer Museum<\/p>\n<p>Well as a bit of a weird coincidence I&#8217;d completely forgotten that we&#8217;d arranged a visit to Milton Keynes on the Saturday immediately after the post<\/p>\n<p>Said friends actually live in the Bletchley area which made things even easier so I dragged <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisyarrow.co.uk\/\">one of my friends along<\/a><\/p>\n<p>First up we had a quick look around the mansion which was a fantastic looking building<a href=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0247.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;\" height=\"155\" alt=\"Mansion\" src=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0247-thumb.jpg\" width=\"230\" border=\"0\"><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In here there were details of the history of some of the famous names such <a href=\"http:\/\/www.turing.org.uk\/turing\/\">Alan Turing<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_Turing\">wikiepedia entry here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>After that we had a quick look through the huts where all the code breaking took place<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;\" height=\"164\" alt=\"DSC_0250\" src=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0250-thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" border=\"0\"> Listening station &#8211; she didn&#8217;t say much <a href=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0254.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;\" height=\"164\" alt=\"DSC_0254\" src=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0254-thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" border=\"0\"><\/a> Alan Turing&#8217;s office<\/p>\n<p>After that we jumped onto the end of one of the tours and heard all about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bombe\">&#8220;bombes&#8221;<\/a> that were used to break the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enigma_machine\">Enigma Machine<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0261.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;\" height=\"164\" alt=\"DSC_0261\" src=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0261-thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" border=\"0\"><\/a> I won&#8217;t try to explain how the bombes worked!<\/p>\n<p>Then it was onto the part I&#8217;d been waiting for and the National computer museum where we got to see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.codesandciphers.org.uk\/lorenz\/rebuild.htm\">Colossus rebuild project<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0265.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;\" height=\"164\" alt=\"DSC_0265\" src=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0265-thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" border=\"0\"><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colossus_computer\">Colossus<\/a> was the world&#8217;s first programmable computer. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0278.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;\" height=\"164\" alt=\"DSC_0278\" src=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0278-thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" border=\"0\"><\/a> It had no storage though and all output was directly to a typewriter<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0276.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;\" height=\"164\" alt=\"DSC_0276\" src=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0276-thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" border=\"0\"><\/a> Calculations were performed using valves and the black valve on the left of this picture is an original valve used during the war! Apparently they have about 10 years worth of spare valves so if you have any old gadgets lying around that have valves they welcome donations<\/p>\n<p>The rebuild project has been led for the last 14 years (!) by the legend that is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Sale\">Tony Sale<\/a>. Most of the documentation was restored and whole project started from just 8 1945 photographs and some fragments of circuit diagrams some of the original engineers had been keeping illegally (good job geeks are hoarders!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-8448.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;\" height=\"164\" alt=\"DSC_8448\" src=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-8448-thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" border=\"0\"><\/a> Me with  Tony Sale<\/p>\n<p>It was onto the museum proper after that and I was in my element!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0294.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;\" height=\"164\" alt=\"DSC_0294\" src=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0294-thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" border=\"0\"><\/a> Calculators and PDA&#8217;s! I had one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psion_5\">Psion&#8217;s<\/a> in this picture! <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0296.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;\" height=\"164\" alt=\"DSC_0296\" src=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0296-thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" border=\"0\"><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BBC_Micro\">BBC Micro!<\/a> I actually owned one of these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicacorn.freeuk.com\/8bit_hardware\/cub\/cub.html\">CUB monitors<\/a> as well. My dad hacked it up so when it was plugged into our spectrum we had sound and volume control. Because it&#8217;s trying to look like a sheet of paper. This system was just a word processor. Look at the size of it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0367.jpg\" class=\"broken_link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;\" height=\"164\" alt=\"DSC_0367\" src=\"http:\/\/parkesy.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/dsc-0367-thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" border=\"0\"><\/a>&nbsp; I want a desk like this in my office!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll stop there&#8230;.as you have probably guessed I took a ton of photo&#8217;s which I then spent the next week boring friends and family with<\/p>\n<p>I had a great time with my only &#8220;criticism&#8221; (not really the right word) was I was expecting to see more hardware as there appears to be lots of gaps in the time periods (Other than a PET I didn&#8217;t see much commodore kit for example). But I do understand it&#8217;s still pretty new and things are being added all the time and they are running on a shoestring (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnmoc.org\/Donations.htm\" class=\"broken_link\">donate!!<\/a>) as the museum itself is free!
