{"id":879,"date":"2011-02-04T14:22:40","date_gmt":"2011-02-04T14:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/2011\/02\/04\/community-looks-great-on-the-cv\/"},"modified":"2011-02-04T14:22:40","modified_gmt":"2011-02-04T14:22:40","slug":"community-looks-great-on-the-cv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/andyparkes.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/2011\/02\/04\/community-looks-great-on-the-cv\/","title":{"rendered":"Community looks great on the CV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had a hard time thinking of a title for this post and I\u2019m not entirely sure if it\u2019s applicable\u2026but it\u2019ll do!<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I read a post called<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/haveyougotwoods.com\/archive\/2011\/02\/02\/Dropping-my-MVP.aspx\" class=\"broken_link\">\u201cDropping my MVP\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The post from David Woods who was until very recently an MVP in developer security.<\/p>\n<p>David isn\u2019t happy with his experience of the MVP program and has decided not accept any further awards. <\/p>\n<p>Now it\u2019s not actually David\u2019s post that prompted my post. It\u2019s some of the comments made. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>1)<\/strong> \u201cAs someone who is trying to get into the MVP program but has not succeeded yet I can&#8217;t speak to your comments on that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>2)<\/strong> \u201cMy observation is that there are people who are professional MVPs; it&#8217;s not that they are experts who end up being selected, it&#8217;s that they are consultants, writers, and trainers who need the credential as a part of their job.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>3)<\/strong> \u201cDon&#8217;t disagree at all about the MVP; from what I&#8217;ve seen it&#8217;s way too easy to &#8220;game the system&#8221;. Do the right things to get the MVP, then just coast for years.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m just  curious to know what other IT Pro\u2019s (and MVPs!) think about the program and similar community recognition. <\/p>\n<p>I always thought MVP status was something <a href=\"https:\/\/mvp.support.microsoft.com\/gp\/aboutmvp\" class=\"broken_link\">that was awarded to you<\/a> as a recognition of things you were doing in the community, regardless of any rewards.<\/p>\n<p>How can you getting into the program be a goal? Something you intentionally seek out?<\/p>\n<p>Surely that would be like me working towards<em> <\/em>becoming an MBE? <\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t in anyway belittling the MVP program or the people on it as this isn\u2019t what its about. You can swap out MVP for any other community recognition award.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve met lots of MVPs and they work they do is fantastic. The amount of their own time, money, blood, sweat and tears (etc) they put into community participation just because they want to should be commended. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m very interested to get other peoples thoughts on this.
