Install Netmeeting on Vista

We have used Netmeeting (Remote Desktop Sharing) in some support situations in the past but it’s no longer installed with Vista

I found this hotfix that allows you to install Netmeeting 3.02 on a Vista PC

However, What you can’t do is setup Remote Desktop Sharing on that Vista PC. You can still connect to older versions of Netmeeting (e.g XP) though

Microsoft have replaced Netmeeting with Windows Meeting Space but with Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance (which is amazing with SBS!) still being my preferred remote support options this isn’t something i’m too worried about

  • Hi,

I’m not sure I’ve come to the right place… I have Vista home premuim on my home computer. I do work from home and occassionaly have the need to do live web cast trainings from my home computer. I did download Netmeeting on my computer and found out that my “sharing” option is not available (grayed out). So is “sharing from desktop”. What do you suggest?

  • Difficult to say Glen

The Microsoft article i mentioned states this

“Cameras that have Windows Vista drivers may be unable to send video through NetMeeting 3.02. If a camera that has Windows Vista drivers installed does not send video through NetMeeting 3.02, you may have to install the following camera:
    Microsoft LifeCam VX 6000
This camera has been tested by using Windows Vista drivers.”

  • NetMeeting was useful for H323 video-communication… 3 Italia (www.tre.it) uses NetMeeting to make video-calls from your mobile phone to a webcam 🙂

  • As far as I know, Netmeeting has been decommissioned since Windows Vista and there is no hotfix to it as it does not work properly. However, Netmeeting has been very well replaced by web conferencing, which is much more powerful and flexible. There are two types of web conferencing solutions: hosted (e.g., WebEx, gotomeeting or gomeetnow) and on-premise (e.g., Lync software package or RHUB appliances).
